Five Things

As you may seen lately, this five things post (& tagging!) has been floating through the blogging world. Yesterday, Emily tagged me in her five things so I wanted to follow up and share a little bit more about myself here on my blog:

1. I have an obsession with nail polish. I am not really sure where it came from, but I have always been known to have quite a variety of colors. Back in college, I had a caboodle (yes, a glittery real-life caboodle) full of nail polish in the sorority house. Girls would come visit whenever they needed a new color and I love sitting around painting nails and chatting. Fast forward to today, I gave my Caboodle away when I moved to DC and I currently have over 100 bottles of nail polish and growing. I even bought five new bottles last week. Oops. As of right now, my favorite color in my collection is Disco Biscuit by Butter London.

2. Two of my good friends, Darci and Ashley, were the inspiration behind my blog. They both have amazing blogs about their families and reading them daily inspired me to start my blog a couple of years ago. I never really posted on my blog until last year (it was my New Years resolution) and I am so happy to see how far my blog has come since then. Thank you for always inspiring me ladies!

3. I am currently training for my first half marathon. I never thought I would sign up for anything so crazy. My mom has been a runner most of my life and in the past ten-ish years she has run many full and half marathons (and triathalons)! I always thought she was nuts but somehow she convinced me that signing up for the Nike Women's Half Marathon in DC was a good idea. We were going to run together until she ended up having surgery in February and can no longer run the race. I still think signing up for this race was one of the best things I have done in awhile. I feel like I am in better shape than ever before and cannot wait to cross the finish line with my friends in just a few weeks! Oh, and mom is still coming to visit. YAY!

4. My all time favorite food is popcorn and I recently discovered the best way to make it. A few months ago I was reading a magazine (I wish I could remember which one- it may have been Clean Eating) and I stumbled across a glass container you use in the microwave to pop popcorn. It is sold exclusively at Sur La Table and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great, healthy way to make popcorn. I like to make it with just a little bit of butter and some parmesan cheese and garlic powder. Sure, my way is not the healthiest way, but boy, is it delicious!

5. I bought a camera last year after deciding that I wanted to take better pictures for my blog. I impulsively bought a Nikon D3100 and had no clue how to even turn it on. Over the summer I took a photography class with my friend Leila and learned more about how to use my camera. I am so glad I took the class and learned the skills I did, but I really want to learn more about photography and hope to take more classes in the future. The one thing I recently learned is my camera is not compatible with the lenses I keep eying online. I do regret purchasing this camera without more research and hope to upgrade it within the next year. Here is one of my favorite photos from this past week:

I would like to tag Christine, Kristin, Tracy, Ashley and the ladies behind Ladies in Navy to post their five things.

What to Wear Running

With my first half marathon right around the corner, I am getting ready to start my training. I have been running a few times a week in order to prepare and I have fallen in love with some running apparel (who knew that could happen!) I wanted to point out a few of my favorites:

Under Armour Cold Weather gear is fabulous. I stumbled across one of these tops at my local Marshalls and love it! It is flattering, warm and functional. Everything you could ask for in a running shirt.

I got really lucky with this vest. I went out running with a local running group a few months ago and there was a raffle after the running. I was the lucky winner of this vest and could not be happier. I love the bright colors and wear it every time I run in the dark. It is so comfortable and a perfect addition to my running wardrobe.

Another Marshalls score! I found a pair of compression running pants and wore them for the first time last night. Amazing. They are breathable and comfortable. Hopefully I can find another pair during my next Marshalls trip.

New running shoes. I had to replace my running shoes last week as mine had seen too many miles. I was fitted for these at Potomac River Running and love the way they feel. I have always run in Asics and am pretty excited about my switch to Brooks.

Do you have any running apparel you love? I'd love to hear your suggestions. I still have about 4 months of training ahead of me.

Sick Day

One of the worst things about colder weather is my tendency to get sick. I spent yesterday working from home with a box of Kleenex and some Sudafed. Because I was not feeling well, I was unable to take blog photos. I spent the day wearing some of my favorite sweats. My mom sent me this jacket last year for Christmas and I can't get enough of it. I never thought I would wear such a bright color but it makes me so much happier when I don't feel good. Oh, and my college sweatpants are always a go-to on sick days.

What do you do to stay comfortable when home sick?

On a happier note, I was officially accepted into the Nike Women's DC Half Marathon yesterday!
Let the training begin!
