PSA: Purse Safety

Never leave your purse in your car.
This past weekend, my mom had an appointment to get her puppy groomed so she drove over to her local Petco early Sunday morning. She was busy taking care of getting the dog inside and she decided to leave her new Dooney and Bourke in the car while she dropped the dog off, knowing that she would be picking the dog up later in the day and would pay for the service then. Not even five minutes after taking the dog out of the car, my mom returned to find that her purse was missing. The door was cracked open and everything was missing: credit cards, ID, lipsticks and more.

She immediately went back into the store to tell the clerks what happened, and ask if there was any sort of surveillance cameras that may have captured photos of the thieves. Because it was Sunday, not many options were available and she was told to check back later in the week. My mom then went home and began looking online to monitor her accounts meanwhile calling each of her banks and canceling all of her cards.

The first transaction on her card was an ATM withdrawal for $300... then another for $200. Somehow the robbers bypassed the pin system and began taking hundreds of dollars out at a time, all without a pin. They then grabbed breakfast at McDonalds and filled up their gas tank before my mom was able to cut off all transactions. Clearly these people knew what they were doing.

After filing an online police report, my mom decided she may have better luck by going to the police station and telling them what happened. Surely one of these locations had a camera they could view to identify these robbers. After speaking with the police, my mom was told there were only eleven officers on duty and they had no time to deal with this type of crime. Eleven? Wow.

Moral of the story: never leave your purse in your car. Even if you are just running into the store. I see more and more stories on the news these days about women having purses stolen while they are pumping gas. You can never be too careful. Losing your purse is one of the worst feelings. Not only must you worry about your credit, but the feeling of violation is awful.

So remember ladies, never leave your purse in your car. It's always safest to take it with you.

  1. Oh no! She has the worst luck, didn't she get robbed another time when you two were on a trip? Mine was stolen along with my car keys and I told the police the exact store and time that my card was used by the thieves hoping that they would look into it and they also said they didn't have time for it. I hope your mom has everything replaced soon.
